Hollywood LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Sept. 22, 2000 Seven Finalists From Across The Country Compete To Be Called The King Of Comedy Winner To Receive A Spot In An Episode Of COMEDY CENTRAL's "Premium Blend" Stand-Up Series, A Volkswagen Beetle, A Trip To Montreal To Perform In Next Year's "Just For Laughs Festival," A Cellular Phone And $3,000 Julie Brown To Host, With Special Performances By Jeffrey Ross And Last Year's Competition Winner, Retta Who is the next big face on the comedy landscape? The answer will be determined tonight at the El Rey Theatre in West Hollywood. Seven comics have made enough judges laugh at semi-final events held across the United States to earn a spot in the finals of COMEDY CENTRAL's "The Laugh Riots" Stand-up Competition tonight at 8:00 p.m. at the El Rey Theatre. The finals will be hosted by Julie Brown ("Medusa: Dare to be Truthful," COMEDY CENTRAL's "Strip Mall") with special performances by comedian Jeffrey Ross and Retta, winner of the last year's inaugural competition. In this, the second year of the annual "Laugh Riots" competition, approximately 70 semi-finalists were selected from hundreds of videotape submissions sent in to COMEDY CENTRAL. Those selected performed in semi-final events held at The Comedy Connection in Boston, The Punchline Comedy Club in Atlanta, Gotham Comedy Club in New York and The Improvisation in West Hollywood for the opportunity to be one of the magnificent seven selected for tonight's final round.
